He spent a year in a children's emergency department and discovered he wanted the opposite.
What he wanted was the continuity — watching children grow, and knowing a family well enough to catch the question a parent was really asking.
Parents describe him as personable. Their children put it more plainly: they ask to come back to him.
Why he left the emergency department
I spent a year training in pediatric emergency medicine at Akron Children's Hospital. I loved the acuity, running traumas, and working in the emergency department — but I realized that what I missed most was getting to know children and their families over time.
I missed the continuity of clinic — the conversations, watching children grow, and being able to build relationships with families rather than just seeing them during a single moment of illness. That realization ultimately brought me back to general pediatrics.
What happens in the room
The exam starts before he touches anyone.
I pay attention to the child before I ever start the exam — how present they are in the room, how they interact with their parent and siblings, how they move, play, talk, and respond to me.
I also try to make sure we answer the question the parent was actually worried about, even if it was not the first thing they said.
I want to understand where parents are coming from first. I explain what I am seeing, what I recommend, and why — and then we make a plan together. Parents know their child better than anyone; my goal is to provide the medical expertise and help us find the safest, most workable path for each individual child.
You do not need to have everything figured out before you come in. Bring your questions — even the ones that may seem small or silly. I would much rather you ask so we can figure it out together.
Getting to Georgia
Born and raised in Southwest Florida. I went to college in Boston, Massachusetts, and Tampa, Florida, then gradually made my way north for medical school in South Carolina, residency in West Virginia, and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship in Ohio. After apparently deciding I had gone far enough north, I came back south to Georgia.
I still shoot 35mm film and genuinely enjoy waiting to see how the photos turned out.
